CLICK ON PHOTOS TO VIEW LARGER IMAGESWinchester rifles, starting with the '66 44 rim fire were commonly called "Yellow Boy" by the Indians because of the brass furniture. This was the first Winchester, the second being the Winchester "73 known as the "gun that won the West". There were many variations of Winchesters which makes them an interesting antique for collectors. The '66 Winchester was available to General Custer, but was not issued by Ulysses S. Grant. So Custer stayed with the single shot (government issue) weapon. The Indians, on the other hand, did use the multiple shot, lever action Winchesters resulting in a massacre that well could have played out differently had both sides been using the Winchesters.
These weapons are increasing in value because of the recent closing of the Winchester factory in Connecticut creating scarcity. Also, condition is always an important governing factor. Winchesters are at a premium.

Winchester Model 1895 lever action
Serial # 84
Cal. 38/72, 26” barrel, very good bore w/very minor pitting.
This is a slipside Winchester although research indicates the serial # 84 should have been a flatside. It was shipped from the factory 5 years after manufacture. So the puzzle goes! Perhaps it was set aside in the factory – rediscovered – and shipped several years later.( may have been held for special presentation because of low serial no.).
45-50% original blue barrel & frame.
Perfect working condition.
A great gun with a good story.
